Troy Bayliss is set to retire at the end of this season, which leaves the question of who will replace the retiring double world champion at the Ducati Xerox team.

Max Biaggi, currently riding for the Sterilgarda Ducati team in 2008, has shown interest in the riding seat but confessed to not having had much direct contact with the factory itself.

Top of the short list of course is Chris Vermeulen although he looks to be staying with MotoGP and then there is Shane Byrne another Rizla Suzuki rider.

It is still possible that the Ducati Xerox team could have two seats available as no contract has as yet been offered to their other rider Michel Fabrizio.

Biaggi, apparently has the backing of Bayliss to join the team and Max sees it as a vital move to increase his chances of getting back to the top of the time-sheets.

The four-times 250cc world champion is currently in seventh place in the championship, 20 points ahead of his team-mate Ruben Xaus.

Bayliss in the meantime now has a lead of 82 points in the championship and is looking more and more likely to claim his third and final world superbike title.
