World Superbikes In Italy

Joy Ryder - Thursday 08.05.08, 19:28pm

troyThis weekend the World Superbike Championship round is at Monza in Italy and Troy Bayliss only needs one more Superpole win to equal Carl Fogarty’s record of 21 career starts from the number one slot on the grid.

Bayliss has confirmed that he will finish in World Superbikes at the end of 2008 and so far this season has managed to amass a 70 point lead in the Championship.  Out of eight races, Bayliss has taken the chequered flag at five of them and has finished second in two.

The Spanish rider, Carlos Checa is Bayliss’s closest rival in his first season in World Superbikes.  The 35-year-old, from Barcelona, has twice taken the second step on the podium but that win is still eluding him.

Troy Corser has appeared on the podium three times this season so far, but the double world Champion has not won a race since Philip Island back in 2006.

Two more Spanish riders are running in fourth and fifth places, Fonsi Nieto and Ruben Xaus.  In sixth place is Noriyuki Haga, who seems to be back on form after getting off to a bad start.  The Japanese rider took a win and a second place at Valencia and Assen and last year at Monza won both races, so a definite contender for this weekend.

Max Neukirchner has been racing in World Superbikes since 2005 and had a podium finish at the Netherlands round.  Max Biaggi has had some disappointing results so far this season, although breaking his wrist at one race didn’t help his championship campaign.
